One of a Kind Bellydance Belts

As I have begun to grow as a dancer, I started looking for costuming that fit my style and spirit. I looked at least a hundred web sites for costume ideas, and came up with nothing. There were no dancers that stood out as individuals to me, and I thought that was sad. Everyone who dances has their own style, and I feel that should be reflected in their costuming. So because I couldn’t find something to please me, I decided to make my own belt to start with. It wasn’t done well, (I really had a lot to learn about making practical costuming!) but when I wear it now, it still makes me feel great! I took a piece of canvas, homemade fabric, shells, mirrors and some paint, and I created something unique that suited me perfectly.

I decided to offer this service to other dancers, and have created custom designed belts for several local dancers. I have also incorporated mandala painting in my belts. Each belt is reversible, with one side made from a designer fabric, and the other side made from artist’s canvas. That way, I am able to create a painting on the canvas side that reflects the personality and personal style and power of the dancer who buys the belt.

Zarinne
This belt was created for Zarinne, a Tribal Fusion dancer from Harrisburg, PA. She and her dance partner Shivati wore coordinating one of a kind belts for the bi-annual hafla sponsored by their dance ensemble, Sangiore. I used natural colors inspired by the ocean, and painted tribal designs that reflected their personalities. Zarinne’s belt has a Celtic Tree of Life and tribal designs, and Shivati’s belt has a dragon and tribal designs. Both belts are reversible, and have cowry shells and/or shisha mirrors on the other side. The yarn fringe is different length for each dancer- long for Zarinne, and shorter for Shivati.

Patti's Belt
This is the original prototype belt that I created in the spring of 2006.
