Healing Mandalas
Mandala means "sacred circle" in the Sanskrit language. The circle has been used throughout history as a way to represent sacred subject matter or to delineate sacred space.  Stonehenge, Buddhist mandalas, the Native American medicine wheel, pentagrams, labyrinths like the one in Chartres Cathedral, halos in religious artwork, and any other places and things are in the shape of a circle. Mandalas are often used as meditation tools, and they are considered a vehicle to help the user to get from one state of thinking or being to another.

I created my first mandala in 2001, when a friend's daughter was hit by a car. I was compelled to draw while I was waiting for news of her condition. I didn't know why, but I felt the need to draw within a circular format. I lit a candle, and began to draw. What I didn't know was that I created a visual prayer for Brittany. I was filling the drawing with healing symbols, and infusing it with energetic intentions.

I have created many mandalas since that day. I've used lots of mediums for them - colored pencil, pen & ink, charcoal, acrylics, and watercolor pencil are my normal choices. They range from 8" to 24" in diameter. Sometimes my help is solicited from someone who wishes to have a mandala made for them. Others, I am just called to create them in response to a situation or a feeling that I have. I also help people create their own mandalas as a healing tool. Mandalas are a tool that everyone can use in their personal healing process. I have worked with many types and ages of people, form at-risk high schools students, to members of a women's arts organization, to residents of a women's shelter.
